Convention on the Rights of the Child Anniversary

A new video by Storytellers for Peace is online and is dedicated to the 35th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The latter is the most important and comprehensive international normative instrument for the promotion and protection of children's rights. It was approved by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989 in New York and came into force on 2 September 1990. The Convention obliges the States that have ratified it to align their domestic law with those of the Convention and to implement all necessary measures to assist parents and institutions in fulfilling their obligations towards minors.

The four fundamental principles of the Convention are the following ones:

  • Non-discrimination: the rights established by the Convention must be guaranteed to all minors, without distinction of race, sex, language, religion, opinion of the child/adolescent or parents.
  •  Best interests of the child: in every law, provision, public or private initiative and in every problematic situation, the interest of the child/adolescent must have priority.
  •  The right to survival and development: States must commit the maximum available resources to protect the life and healthy development of children, including through international cooperation.
  •  The views of the child: provides for the right of children to be heard in all decision-making processes that concern them, and the corresponding duty, for adults, to take their opinions into adequate consideration.
